Guest: BECKY DUE

Today my guest is author Becky Due, who is going to chat about why she loves Contemporary Romance, as an writer, and a reader! Welcome Becky!

Why I Love (and Write) Contemporary Romance:

When I started writing, I never imagined I would write a contemporary romance novel, because my first novel, The Gentlemen’s Club: A Story for All Women, deals with serious women’s issues. However, every novel after my first has been a wonderful contemporary love story mix in with the struggles we go through as women.

I love and write contemporary romance because dreaming about love is good for the soul. A sweet romance novel can be a wonderful escape from our daily stressful lives as wife, mother, and daughter. We can fall into the quick-moving story and forget about bills, heartache, and loneliness for a little while. A good romance may stir up memories of our first loves, or make us want to curl up on the couch with our husbands. There is nothing more energizing, motivating or inspiring than a wonderful story about love.

I love and write contemporary romance because with this genre, we can often celebrate women through humor. In my latest novel, The Dumpster: One Woman’s Search for Love, we get to laugh at the crazy, sometimes embarrassing things we do for love. I was so guilty of making a fool of myself, playing games and slightly losing touch with reality in my quest for love, so when I see others, even fictional characters, making the same mistakes, I don’t feel so alone and I open myself up to laughter. In contemporary romance novels, the lead women are always just like every woman I’ve ever known; they are fun, smart, kind, beautiful, stubborn, independent and full of life. These novels offer a wonderful way to celebrate women—our friends and ourselves.

I love and write contemporary romance because I am a true romantic, and I love everything about romance. For years, I imagined I would spend my life as a single woman; I would grow old alone. I was independent, loved my life, and dated a little here and there. I couldn’t imagine a man special enough to make me want to change my path, but that amazing man came along and thought I was special too. Today I’m living my own wonderful contemporary romance with my husband.

The contemporary romance novels I love and write give examples of strong independent women who want love and romance but also want to keep balance in their lives while staying true to themselves. The heroines get creative about reevaluating their lives when things are not working out as they had planned. They have great friends who encourage and support them. And most importantly, they are happy with or without men, nevertheless they always get their perfect gentlemen in the end.
