Past Fantasy:

If you’re reading this, then like me, you probably love reading and the escapism of a good book! That escapism can be found in a wide range of genres from fantasy to paranormal, romance to science fiction, and my favourite – historical romance.

I only discovered historical romance in the past few years; always an avid reader, I was in my thirties when I picked up a book by Eloisa James…and was totally and utterly entranced.

Then it struck me; all those years of reading and what I had been looking for was a release from the pressures of everyday life - and I found it in a world where men were such potent creatures, that a woman alone with one meant ruin for her reputation.

Like a child discovering chocolate, suddenly I couldn’t get enough of silk gowns and stays, breeches and boots, and not forgetting those horse-riding heroes with well-toned thighs from hours in the saddle. Just imagine, a time with no telephones and text, the closest to a text message was to ‘say it with flowers’ – a truly romantic time.

And that’s why I love historical romance – the escapism, and as a writer, my aim is to write the sort of page turning romance I love to read…. and ‘A Dead Man’s Debt’ was born.

Set in Regency London, ‘A Dead Man’s Debt’ is a story of blackmail, duty and unexpected love. Our hero, the darkly, brooding, Lord Ranulf Charing, must sacrifice his happiness to honour family obligations; whilst our heroine, the rebellious Celeste Armitage, defies her parents and is sent to the country in disgrace.

The sparks fly between this unlikely couple because they are such complete opposites; Ranulf hamstrung by the rules of society and his grieving mother’s manipulations, whilst Celeste doesn’t give a fig for the Ton or authority; she knows exactly what she wants and it isn’t about to marry just to please her parents.

So when some of Celeste’s spirit rubs off on dutiful Ranulf, he must risk lowering his defences and take a chance on happiness. Celeste teaches Lord Ranulf about living life to the full and what really matters, and in return Ranulf reveals a world of sensuous passion that sends Celeste reeling. But of course things are never that straightforward and sometimes only death reveals who is truly too precious to lose….
